Galveston County Judge Mark Henry has endorsed a redistricting map that would put Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula in the same county precinct, maybe for the first time in history.

Galveston County’s 50 miles of coast would have a single representative on the commissioners court. Henry and other officials have said the plan would improve representation for coastal dwellers.

By going to one precinct you give more power to the northern areas of the county to pull resources away from the south. A 4 to 1 vote in favor of the north under this plan. A move everyone one along the coast will regret.

I'm for keeping 2 Commissioner precincts on the coast...we need the support and attention.

I hate to hear this. I hope Stephen Holmes' precinct isn't changed. He's a fine man and has been an excellent County Commissioner. I know Steve well having hired him as a Galveston County assistant district attorney on my staff shortly after he graduated from law school. I also believe having a minority precinct is healthy for our political process and that ALL commissioners in Galveston County should be knowledgeable and strong advocates on coastal issues.

The main goal of "Redistricting" should be first based on equal distribution of residents based on the number of legislator representatives we are assigned, i.e., Commissioners, School Boards, Senators, etc. Then boundaries should be adjusted using some rational approaches regarding urban and geographical foot-prints to effectively balance the "districts."

The use of political and ethnoracial factions to leverage boundaries/groupings is counterproductive and counterintuitive. Just my thoughts.
