Crews on Tuesday began a $3.47 million construction project on one of downtown Galveston’s busiest streets.

The city expects to complete the reconstruction of Market Street, from 19th Street to 25th Street, by March 30, 2018, city spokeswoman Jaree Fortin said. Drivers can expect some street closures throughout construction, she said.

The improvements will include the replacement of asphalt road surfaces with concrete, as well as an overhaul of underground drainage and utilities, Fortin said.

The city is paying for the project through Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery dollars, Fortin said.

Because it’s funded through federal grant dollars, the street will now have accessible sidewalks and ramps, meaning some trees and landscaping next to the curb will be affected, according to a news release. Contractors will reach out to residents and business owners who have landscaping in the rights-of-way, Fortin said.
