What a huge waste of taxpayer dollars - the cost of the new part of this agreement was conservatively estimated at $42.5 million. You read that right, in case you’re wondering if I got the figure wrong. As a county taxpayer myself, I’m very disappointed in Commissioners Holmes, Apffel and Giusti. When ordinary taxpayers like you and me make improvements to our Galveston County property, we have to pay higher property taxes immediately. We don’t get to reinvest our tax dollars back into our own property and neighborhoods like TIRZ developers do. That’s unfair. Another problem is that this will keep the Lago Mar development off the tax rolls for an additional ten years, putting the lie to the TIRZes’ typical argument that their special deals bring value to the public - in reality, they divert it to themselves and delay it going onto the tax rolls as in this case. To add insult to injury, Sue Darcy is on the public payroll - she’s being paid with county tax funds to manage this TIRZ, but like all of the myriad consultants, accountants, lawyers, etc., who make a living live off of TIRZes, her loyalty is to the developer. Hats off to Judge Henry and Commissioner Clark for opposing this give-away: You showed your commitment to fairness, fiscal responsibility, and good government.
