Galveston locals and visitors alike gathered downtown to celebrate the first weekend of Mardi Gras. The annual George P. Mitchell Mardi Gras Award Parade was the first of 22 parades this season. The Daily News' Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade followed with multiple teams of people bringing their most creative umbrellas to The Strand.

Beads and dancing were in abundance on the clear, first night of Mardi Gras.

Although weather is not promised to be clear the whole weekend, the city expects a larger turn out than last year. Last year, at least 65,000 people paid to attend downtown events.

Rain is expected Saturday, but it won’t persist for long periods, according to weather forecasters.
