Sandhill cranes

Sandhill cranes flock by families.

Right around New Year’s, perhaps the most important day of the year is the long, arduous Christmas Bird Count.

This is the day various circles on the map are drawn and divided up among groups of people called parties. But my friends, it’s no party. And the purpose of the counts is the population of each species, used by the government for conservation.
