Yes I will I went there one time a week. Paul was a great friend of mine and I am sad to heard he is not well. God Bless and comfort him. I hope him and his family the best.
I enjoyed every visit I made to Sudie's and Jackie B's. Very friendly staff, and the food was always quite tasty. I figured that it had closed because the city had failed to build things up around it--the long proposed hotel and other things on the Clear Creek banks. It would be nice to hear what ever came of the plans for all of that development.
"the city had failed to build things up around it". You really mean private industry failed, right? Or do you really want League City government to get into the real estate business?
Definitely, private business has to do a ton of heavy lifting. However, the city has some lifting they need to do, too. I certainly don't think that the city denying the Stripe permit helped with any of the Wesley Drive development momentum. The city has been more than happy to hand over tax incentives over near Victory Lakes. Just about a decade ago, the city was all goo-goo gaga about that Riverwalk project along Clear Creek. I remember the fancy drawings showing hotels and entertainment venues there at Wesley and I-45.
I'm going to go out on a limb, but I'd speculate that the city's vision is to get developers to clog up everything around Victory Lakes and Big League Dreams, and has lost interest in promoting the value around 518.
Also, my use of "city" was as a collective noun that includes the government, the citizens, and the business community. It does take all working together to make something work.
Yes, and not least the citizens, who should diligently call out LC government leaders who try to "give away the farm" with tax incentives. Incentives done wrong are the same as crony capitalism. As I wrote before, corporate welfare can be every bit as bad as personal welfare.
Our council members, supposedly, are citizens too. If they aren't listening to their own consciences and campaign messages, they certainly aren't going to listen to our complaints. When we get around to voting them out, it's because WE don't understand, not because THEY didn't, or at least that's how they spin it.
Stripes tried to do their part but some councilma Said was trying to upgrade the architecture of the area. Really the business just opened is proof they were deceitful in this matter . I believe he persuaded the council that stripes was ugly for unknown reason and they voted down the permit. Get a life city council.
I ate ther last week for first time in over a year. The food was only ok, when you have resturants along the coast that you know have fresh seafood, well you just can't compeat. I hope some other type of resturant opens in the building it a great location...
It was great food when they first opened up. The catfish was really good and so was the service. The food and service declined over the years like the owners lost interest. That business failing was their own fault and not the city . Ya'll sound like the New Democrats / Socialist part that think government should bail out everybody and have their hand in everything .
Say what? Who said anything about the government bailing people out?
Sudie's AND La Brisa were both built during the time the city was working with a large developer to build a creekside destination that would stretch from I-45 to FM-270. I have no idea how much that proposed development played into the decisions to build those restaurants, but I doubt it wasn't ignored as part of their sustainability projections.
As it is, I suppose that Sudie's had a good run at that location. Chances are good that over the years, they finished with more money than they put into it. I'll take them at their word that family health issues were their primary motivation for closing. However, I can't help but think that IF that Destination Area plan that was supposed to have come to that area had been developed, and the place was packed full every night, this location may not have been the one they closed, or they would have found other ways to keep the place open.
Personally, I don't think the City should have developed the area. However, that doesn't mean that the City shouldn't at least pitch the benefits to the area as a part of the economic development push.
Alvinbr62, I agree with you that "That business failing was their own fault and not the city."
The River Bend development that was planned for the Wesley Drive area didn't get done because the property developer didn't follow through with the written agreement he made with the city. After the agreement was signed, the developer wanted to build many more apartments and much fewer office/retail space in that area than the contract stated. The city wisely refused to cave in to the developer's demands. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that any residences along Wesley, let alone many more than planned, could make the traffic nightmare on FM518 even worse.
Most of us will go just about anywhere there is good food and good service. Oft times, good, well prepared food surpasses good service. No matter what was around Sudie's, the food and service had diminished considerably since it opened. More over, the last time my group was there (more than a year ago), the place didn't seem very clean. None of us ever returned. Too many better choices.
At this point Closing of Sudies was sad for me but I am more concerned for the owner , his health and his family. As I understand pauls health was a big factor and one can see maybe things were not as good as could be at Sudies. Whose fault no one, you have to play with the hand dealt and I believe Paul did all he coould because he was a people person. I worked with Paul when he came right out of college and he was a fine person then and never changed. He and I played a lot of basketball on the same team. Good luck Paul and hope you the best.

Oh my. Where will the GOP meet next?
Probably meet the donkeys at their weekly meeting at Heartbreakers.

Mr. Lang,
"the city had failed to build things up around it". You really mean private industry failed, right? Or do you really want League City government to get into the real estate business?

dbeard57, do you mean to say that you don't find that new TimeWise station to be the most beautiful piece of architecture you've seen in your life?
I guess you just don't know great architecture when you see it. [beam][beam]
hope you are just trying to be funny
"Trying" is probably the operative word :-)
There may very well be some gorgeous gas station designs out there somewhere. I don't foresee any of them being put into League City anytime soon.
yes private business needs to do their part but city has last say like refusing to approve permits.
Loved the patio and the live music when they had musicians. The food was good, a little heavy on fried options for my taste.
Unfortunately the last time we tried to go there a couple of months ago, the service was terrible. Friends of mine confirmed the same.
I gave them up when they sued BP.
I've seen enough of that to last several lifetimes....

Alvin nowhere in the post are people saying the gov needs to bail out people. These things are both city and business doing things together.
Alvin to say a business failing is someone fault because their health failed is in poor taste.

Ya'll?
No.
I sound like somebody who doesn't like it when people take advantage of situations just because they can get away with it.
