The Rev. Rob Bailey, left, leads a session of South Lake Church’s Pints and Questions at a League City tavern last week. The group meets Sundays at Hometown Heroes Park, but rotates between bars and wineries for weeknight events.

Most Americans won’t recognize the name, Katharina von Bora, but most Germans do. She was Martin Luther’s wife. The former nun was a phenomenal micro-brewer according to her biographers and her signature beers remain popular to this day in Bavaria.

Which probably has little to do with South Lake, a new Lutheran church plant, that holds some of its mid-week sessions at a craft beer house on the League City Parkway. Except, perhaps for the fact that both Luther and these Lutherans, led by the Rev. Rob Bailey, have a thing for a good tavern and a European-style dark ale.
