Silk Purse history shot courtesy art for OF IMG_0531.jpg

The house that became the Silk Purse some 60 years ago. This photograph is from 1899. The building is now part of the Grace Episcopal Church campus.

Sixty years ago these pages noted the arrival of a naval destroyer and reported that a Houstonian had won “the Miss Fishing Rodeo” contest. But we may have missed some news of more lasting import: The Silk Purse was formed.

It was October of 1959 when, according to the official Grace Episcopal Church history, “the Silk Purse was begun and run by the women of the parish for the benefit of the poor.”
