The inaugural Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival is set to take place beginning today through Sunday at various venues across the Galveston County Bay Area in cities such as Kemah, Seabrook and San Leon.

The festival, which will feature a plethora of musicians from Houston, Austin, California, Virginia and Tennessee, will now be dedicated to helping those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Proceeds will now be donated to Hurricane Harvey relief and recovery efforts, said Jon Burns, one of the festival organizers.

The performances by Radney Foster and David Lee Murphy, who were originally scheduled to headline the festival, were canceled on Monday due to the rescheduling of the event due to Hurricane Harvey, Burns said.

“The festival was created as a way to help independent songwriters and artists reach a greater audience, while also exposing the Galveston Bay area to music fans across the country,” Burns said. “Many of the acts live in our area, so attendees will see some familiar faces.”

Kicking things off will be performances by Will Kimbrough, Mary Cutrufello, Christopher Dale, and The Detentions today (at 6 p.m.) at Cabo Clear Lake, 2513 NASA Road 1, in Seabrook. Over in San Leon, musician Eric Stone will perform at 6:30 p.m. today at the Railean Buccaneer Bar, 341 Fifth St.

Also at 6 p.m. today over at T-Bone Tom’s, 707 state Highway 146, in Kemah, there will be performances by Brant Croucher, Lainey Balagia and Brad Boyer; Jim Hoehn, Jesse Rice, and Dave McKenney are set to perform at 7:30 p.m.; and Drop Dead Dangerous will perform at 9:15 p.m.

For those of you who want to enjoy the elements outdoors, performances by Ben Reyna & Steve Johnson (5 p.m.), Bryan Shayne, Coley McCabe and Aaron Scherz (6:15 p.m.), and Jerry Diaz, Thom Shepherd and Donny Brewer (8 p.m.), will be on stage in the city of Kemah’s parking lot at city hall, 604 Bradford Ave., in Kemah. Admission to these performances today will be $15 per person.

“Attendees can expect lots of great original music,” Burns said. “Most shows will be performed ‘In the Round’ with three songwriters onstage at once, taking turns telling the stories behind their songs and playing them.”

On Saturday, the festival also will include performances by Steve Johnson, Chris Hardy, Rain Jaudon, Justin Black, Aaron Scherz, Jesse Rice, Dennis Davis, Mandi Powell, Shaun Michael, Shane Barnhill, Kitty Steadman, Joe Bailey and more.
