Galveston Island will celebrate its 109th Mardi Gras celebration with a plethora of parades, balls, concerts and family-oriented events tonight in the entertainment district in downtown Galveston.

This year’s festivities will kick off with the George P. Mitchell Mardi Gras Award presentation to VJ Tramonte at 5 p.m. today in front of The Tremont House, 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row, in Galveston.
