Fortune cookie: Inquiring islanders want to know about all that construction-prep work near Odyssey Academy on the southeast corner of 61st Street and Stewart Road in Galveston. City officials confirm it’s for fast-food eatery Panda Express.

Rosemead, California-based Panda Express, which serves American-Chinese cuisine at more than 2,200 locations, is the largest Asian-segment restaurant chain in the United States. The chain was founded in 1983 and is popular for such fare as Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, Cream Cheese Rangoons and more. No word on an opening date. Stay tuned.

I love the Haak Winery and their products, especially their port. I hope the new owners do it justice.

Gladys, Raymond, and their daughters are good people. With their continued input and their name on the label they will see that the quality continues.

Glad to hear about Panda Express coming to Galveston. Got hooked on it while living in Los Angeles. Good quality Chinese food for a resonable price.

I used to haul grapes to Haak Winery when I was in trucking. Raymond and Gladys are great people and have a passion for wine making. I wish the new operators good luck and hope that they keep Raymond involved as much as he wants. Congratulations on their retirement.

I had a construction worker tell me he and his wife were visiting Hawk Winery a year or two ago. His wife was still breastfeeding, so they asked this “older lady that seemed like she worked there”, if there was a spot they could go to nurse the baby. They said the lady was so nice and proceeded to lead them into house next door. They said she told them to make themselves at home, take all the time they needed, and she would be next door if they needed anything. They said they never did see her again to thank her.

I told them “Yeah, that was Gladys alright!”
