Retail detail: Will commercial development rise on a prime Interstate 45 parcel in Dickinson?

That’s the plan. Co-developers REME Companies and William Cole Inc. plan a 15-acre mixed-use project called Water Street that includes retail, restaurants and offices filled with professionals in the former site of Sussan Fine Furniture, 3820 I-45.

Before Sussan’s and before WalMart, this was the location of the Hofbrau House, a German beer garden and restaurant. This was way before craft beers were popular, and with the warm beer served outside in pitchers it was absolutely the best place to take out of town guests.

Funny how the mosquitoes didn’t seem to bother us that much back then.

The Hofbräugarten German Village was located on FM 517 one block west of I-45 (The gulf Freeway). Members of the Santa Fe High School Band would practice Friday nights during the 3rd quarter playing oompah music (including beer commercial songs) then perform Saturday at the Hofbräugarten.

The Hofbräugarten was opened in 1963 by Jack Papich who once operated the Forum Cafe. It shut down in the early 1980s. The village was large and it could have encompassed the location of the Dickinson Wal-Mart. Here's some postcards:

My Santa Fe HS band classmates and I would frequent this restaurant. It was so much fun for us to see some of our upperclassmen play there. Music, dancing and the food was good! Haven't thought about that place in years!

This information is great Carlos, I love the old post card. Yes, you entered the parking lot off of 517, so yeah that was probably their address. Several of us Clear Creek High School graduates (and some that wern’t) went there a lot. My parents also loved the place and like I said, took out of town visitors there.
