Crews clearing old Fort Crockett site

Construction crews clear concrete from the old Fort Crockett site on the seawall near 45th Street in Galveston on Friday, Sept. 25, 2020.

Tru story: Readers are wondering about all the preconstruction activity west of Hospitality Health ER in the former military housing complex known as Fort Crockett. The work is for a 200-room hotel, confirms Ricky Patel, a principal in the company behind the venture.

Patel recently acquired 2.5 acres at the site in the 4200 block of Seawall Boulevard to build two Hilton concepts as one property — Tru by Hilton and Home2Suites. Tru by Hilton is known for large lobbies, 24/7 markets serving gourmet snacks and drinks — including single-serve beer and wine — and semi-private alcoves, according to Hilton. Home2Suites is an extended-stay hotel featuring contemporary accommodations. It competes with TownePlace Suites by Marriott and InterContinental Hotels Group’s Candlewood Suites.

It's a shame about the Fort Crockett buildings. I wish someone had come along a few decades ago and saved them. They still show up on Google satellite view, on Sarna Court. The hotel sounds nice, though.

I agree, Bailey...I wished they had been able to save them...it’s still a bane of contention, in my opinion!! However, the hotel may block of sea breeze that people behind it may miss...I wish they had turned it into a park!! That would’ve been really nice!!

Kratom side effects:

When taken by mouth: Kratom is POSSIBLY UNSAFE for most people. Kratom can cause many side effects, including tongue numbness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, need to urinate, constipation, aggression, hallucinations, delusions, and thyroid problems. Kratom in large doses may cause trouble breathing, brain swelling, seizure, liver damage, and death.

Kratom can cause dependence when taken regularly. People who use kratom regularly and then stop taking it may experience decreased appetite, diarrhea, muscle pain and spasms, twitches, watery eyes, anxiety, trouble sleeping, anger, hot flashes, and fever.

Babies born to women who have used kratom during pregnancy have experienced withdrawal symptoms. These babies required special treatment for addiction.

People with alcohol dependence who use kratom appear to have an increased risk of suicide compared to those who use kratom but are not dependent on alcohol.

In theory, kratom might worsen existing mental disorders. Also, people with mental disorders who use kratom appear to have an increased risk of suicide compared to those who use kratom but do not have a mental disorder.

I wonder how tall the new hotel will be?

The Tru hotels I've seen are 4-5 stories.

I stay in a lot of Hilton-branded hotels. Of them, Tru is my least liked. It is designed to appeal to younger people, and is usually a less expensive choice of the medium grade corporate hotels.

It’s not because the buildings were poorly built, as the ones still standing on 53rd St seem to have held up well. The previous owners of the Ave U structures (or Sarna Court as Bailey discovered) let those deliberately decay.
