Grab some popcorn: As the 92nd annual Academy Awards airs tonight, county moviegoers can look forward to some big box office buzz.

First, Friendswood attorney and developer Jerome Karam doesn’t intend to lose, at least without a fight, a big tenant at Mainland City Centre, formerly known as the Mall of the Mainland, 10000 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, in Texas City. (Read more about the name change shortly). That big tenant is Cinemark Movies 12, a tradition for many mainland moviegoers. Rumors began circulating late last year about another developer trying to entice Cinemark to move to another site on the less developed side of residential and commercial development Lago Mar.

The Cinemark at MOM is beyond new chairs and an outside refurbishment. The last time I was there, about 3 years ago, it was not a good experience. It still had the same broken chairs from back in the early 90's! Anyway, I digress. However, I am wildly excited for the new Alamo Drafthouse. It's more than a movie house that serves food and alcohol. It caters to those whose movie tastes are more avant garde. They hold special screenings of non-wide release films as well as oft forgotten classics. Thing thing I look forward to is their cereal parties. That's where they have a cereal buffet while watching cartoons or latest kid flick on the big screen..

We were just there at the Cinemark this past Sat. at Mom and the studio we were in was very clean and the seats, although not recliners, appeared to be new and were most comfortable. I like to the short drive to MOM. I'm sure an upgrade would be welcomed. However, the entrance to the mall needs daily cleaning.
