TEXAS CITY — Galveston Bay is open to all marine traffic, according to a statement from the leaders of efforts to clean up an oil spill that shutdown one of the nation’s biggest ports for several days.

The Texas City Y Response Unified Command announced Thursday night that vessels can enter and exit the bay. The only restrictions remaining require all vessels to stay a safe distance from and maintain safe speeds around oil cleanup operations. Vessels must also avoid any areas with visible or sheening oil in the water.

All recreational activities are allowed, although authorities recommend that swimmers avoid areas where oil is visible.
