The Kemp's Ridley is the State of Texas' official sea-turtle. Last year, Oppe Elementary School children lobbied successfully in Austin for the turtle to be made the official state turtle to help raise awareness of the critically endangered species.
The release of two Kemp's ridley sea turtles marked the end of the Sea Turte Restoration Project "shell-ebrations" Â Saturday.

It is a triumph whenever a sea-turtle is released from rehabilitation and makes its way back into the ocean.
Saturday saw the opening celebrations for the Texas Sea Turtle Restoration Project, an organization helping with raising and distribution of funds for sea-turtle research and conservation. The headquarters will be in the old Salvation Army building on Broadway and 23rd Street in Galveston.
