Reporter Christopher Smith Gonzalez has agreed to undergo a makeover for the Glamour for Grammar fashion show on Aug. 14, 2013. Rather than go it alone, he figured it would be a good idea to get some help from those who know a bit about fashion.
Melinda Emmons, owner of Melinda's Boutique, knows a thing or two about the fashion has agreed to share some tips with The Daily News.
Updating past trends
Fashion runs its course in circles. We’ve seen many styles come and go, and when they come around again, designers make a few little updates to trends of the past.
Get in the groove with the maxi skirt, a very popular trend from the 70’s. They’re back, and they are amazing. Busy prints, yes; Solids, no. Fun prints, stripes with flowers, tye-dye, “Love” printed all over a black skirt, animal print, etc.
They are easy to accessorize by wearing a simple solid-color tank, short pendant on a leather cord layered with a long chain necklace, cuff bracelet, colorful body bag, and flat sandals.
Show off your hippy style!
The great Coco Chanel, who popularized the look for women in the 1920’s, loved stripes because they are crisp and fresh. You have to know how to wear stripes to falsify the myth that they make you look large. Vertical stripes are slimming, but horizontal stripes balance proportions.
For instance, wear horizontal stripes on top if you have wide hips or on the bottom if you have a large bust. Narrow stripes are easier to wear than wide but, you will see a mixture of both in one garment this season.
Be careful of tight-fitting, striped silhouettes as they will highlight your curves. Add solid sandals, and you are ready for our warm summer nights.
Bright, colorful purses are trending right now, so don’t miss out! Whether you choose a large handbag, bodybag, or wristlet, be sure the print is cheery and leans toward the ethnic look.
Accessorize your bag by adding a cute and colorful skull coin purse. The versatility of these prints and colors will get you through the rest of the summer.
