Summer is nearly here and Galveston is ushering in the longer days and parties on the beach and backyard barbecue with plenty of free music. East Beach is Galveston party place and this weekend it's sure to be hoping.

Not only is it Memorial Day weekend, but the island convention and visitor's bureau teamed up with Houston radio station The Buzz 94.5 FM to host a party to celebrate the $1.6 million makeover of East Beach.

The beach now has a new pavilion, boardwalk and entertainment stage. The stage has already been put to use with a series of free concerts on the third and fourth Sundays in May through September. This weekend there will be music on both Saturday and Sunday.

As part of the grand opening party, The Buzz 94.5 FM is bringing out a group of grungy alt rock Houston area bands, The Last Place You Look, Who is BC and Lost Element, playing from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, you can listen to Hypersoul playing at East Beach from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

There is more free, outdoor music over at Saengerfest Park with funk group The Journey Agents on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
