In a town of fewer than 16,000, La Marque’s latest crime rate rivals that of larger cities and the police department isn’t equipped to keep drugs and violence in check, local law enforcement officials say.
Today begins the nine-day season for recreational anglers on private boats to fish for red snapper. The charter boat and party boat season for the popular fish also begins on June 1; however, it runs through July 16, a 46-day season versus a nine-day term for private boats.
There have been four elections since Hurricane Ike hit Galveston Island on Sept. 13, 2008. If there had been another storm since then I would understand why District 1 looks the same today as it did on Sept. 12, 2008; you see we have had the same individuals in office in District 1 every year since Ike hit. You would have thought that since the city had received over $2 billion in government Community Development Block Grant funds that there would have been some real improvements in the way District 1 looks, other than the developments of public housing units that are being built to replace the ones that were torn down after Ike.
Imagine bringing your family to Stewart Beach on a warm summer day and seeing a brand-new pavilion, shade structures, landscaping and boardwalks. Amenities like these are part of a master plan the Park Board of Trustees unveiled in 2015, and thanks to recently approved increases in parking fees at the beach parks, will be made possible a whole lot sooner.
