TEXAS CITY —A burglar’s plans were thwarted Sunday morning by an angry homeowner and a fireplace poker.
The 47-year-old woman discovered an unidentified man snooping in her bedroom at approximately 4:10 a.m. Sunday, Texas City police said. She wasn’t about to let him sneak off with her belongings.
Authorities said the woman grabbed a fireplace poker and began to strike the man with it. When the man tried to get away from her, she began grabbing his clothes and tearing them off.
A hooded sweatshirt, a shoe and a shirt were found at the scene, police said.
While the woman fought with the intruder, her son called police. By the time they arrived, however, the suspect had fled the scene.
Attacking an intruder isn’t something the police suggest, said Sgt. Brian Goetschius of the TCPD, because you never know what a person will do.
The police department feels fortunate that the woman is safe, he said, but encourages anyone who may find himself or herself in a similar situation to think about their personal safety first.
Authorities describe the suspect as a Hispanic male, between 16 and 20 years old, 5-foot-7-inches tall and weighing 140 pounds.
Anyone with information should contact the Texas City Police Department at (409) 948-2525.
