GALVESTON — The prospects for Monday’s Clear Brook-Ball High football game appear bleak.
The teams hoped to play the game, originally scheduled for Friday night, at 7 p.m. Monday. Although Galveston was spared the brutal force of Hurricane Rita, the city will not allow residents back in until Monday at the earliest.
Friday is Ball High’s open week, but it is unlikely District 24-5A officials will allow Clear Brook to play two games in less than a week.
Either way, the time off is a concern for Tors head coach Ron Holmes, whose 3-1 team is just a one-point loss to La Marque away from being undefeated.
“It would be hard to get ready for a game without having practice time,” he said. “We’ll be a little rusty, but that is an issue other teams will be dealing with as well.”
Friendswood head coach Steve Van Meter is confident the 2-2 Mustangs will be able to play Crosby on Friday night. Both teams received a break in that this week was originally scheduled to be an open date for both squads.
“We definitely don’t want to miss two straight weeks going into district (23-4A) play,” said Van Meter. Friendswood opens league play against Dickinson Oct. 7.
La Marque, the state’s No. 1 team in 4A, had Friday off, but with a homecoming date against Houston Smiley at Friday at 7:30 p.m., coach Bryan Erwin wants to get his 4-0 squad in gear prior to district action.
“We’re going to hit the ground running when we come back,” said Erwin. “We would have loved to have had more practice, but we had two really good days before heading out. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure we’re playing Friday night.”
Texas City has an open date Friday, and officials plan on looking for a school to match up with.
Area volleyball schedules have also been greatly affected, as most schools will have three games to make up, although several schools were able to get games in Tuesday.
District 24-5A champion Clear Creek needed all of Candice Davis’ nine kills as the Wildcats held off Clear Brook, 3-2. Creek rallied from an 0-2 deficit to win the last three games to remain undefeated in league play.
Santa Fe opened District 23-4A play with a sweep of a La Marque. The Lady Indians and Lady Cougars were the only schools that got a match in as Channelview-Texas City and the highly awaited showdown between Dickinson and Friendswood were postponed.
Bay Area Christian lost a 3-2 match to St. John’s.
School officials had planned to resume regular athletic schedules if classes opened Monday, but most schools likely to open Tuesday or Wednesday. A full slate of volleyball games scheduled for Tuesday night will pushed back.
