‘I had just given birth to twin boys’

I remember it well, as I had just given birth to twin boys in April and was staying at my parents’ home at 39th Street and Avenue Q1?2 with my younger and older brothers and grandfather.
My husband was unable to leave his refinery in Texas City, but he was eventually able to get home hitching a ride on one of the large utilities trucks, but still had to walk several blocks in high water before reaching the house.
The house my daddy built rocked and rolled, and the bed I was in with my two sons creaked and shook.
The electricity was out for some two weeks, and we needed ice to keep the formulas cold.
My daddy had a good friend who was a manager at the Falstaff Brewery, and every day he would make the trip to get ice for the icebox.
The only damage to our home was a broken window on the north side in the attic, and to get the water out of the house Daddy drilled holes in the floor. The plugs to repair those holes could still be seen for years afterward until they had the floor covered with tile.
The house still stands, but has been moved from its location due to the expansion of the community college’s campus.
It was a very difficult time, but with the help of my family and friends we were able to weather the storm of 1943.
I am 83 years of age and live in an assisted-living facility in League City, but my heart and soul will always be on the island.
