TEXAS CITY — At least 19 people died in Galveston County during Hurricane Ike and its aftermath, and at least two of those deaths appear to be drownings.
It’s not clear how many of the deaths are related to the hurricane. Autopsies on those people were beginning Wednesday morning now that the medical examiner’s office in Texas City has power.
One drowning death occurred at the Sandpiper Motel, medical examiner’s office spokesman John Florence said.
Another death was reported today in San Leon, but it’s not yet known if it was related to the storm.
Some of the deaths may have been medical problems exacerbated by the hurricane and power outages, Florence said.
It’s not clear yet how many of those 19 people were from Galveston County.
