TEXAS CITY — Texas City volleyball coach Mich Robertson liked her team’s performance in the final set of a three-game sweep loss to Channelview.
She just hopes that level of play can come back before it’s too late to compete for the playoffs in District 23-4A.
“We showed up too late,” Robertson said of the Lady Stings’ 25-11, 25-17, 25-23 defeat Saturday. “I was proud of our comeback in the third game, but it needed to come earlier if we were going to get back in it.”
Texas City is 0-2 in 23-4A competition, which resumed after Hurricane Rita spurred Galveston County’s first mandatory evacuation and pre-empted all but one league match last week. The Lady Stings didn’t play at all last week and didn’t hit the court this week until Friday, when Dickinson swept them.
Natalie Squier had seven kills to lead Texas City against Channelview, which is 2-0 in district and tied with Santa Fe for first place. Melonee Scurlock led Texas City with four kills against Dickinson, which played its first league contest Friday and is off this weekend.
Teams will play up to three games per week over the remainder of the regular-season schedule as needed to make up games.
Texas City is far from being eliminated, but time is ticking against a recovery and the Lady Stings’ bid for their first playoff appearance since 1988.
“It’s just real rocky right now,” Robertson said. “We have a lot to work on, but we can still fix things at this point.”
In League City, Clear Creek trounced Ball High by scores of 25-13, 25-6 25-10 in a District 24-5A match.
Creek is unbeaten in league play, and the Lady Tors are 0-4.
“We just need to get back in our rhythm and get our confidence back,” Lady Tors coach Chandra Smith said.
