‘The doctor ... did not expect him to live’

Bradshaw’s Florist and Garden Center was at 2623 and 2627 Broadway from 1932 until it was sold in 1972.
In 1943, we had been there 12 years when Eddie Bradshaw, the owner, was rushed to the hospital with internal hemorrhaging from bleeding ulcers.
This was during the 1943 storm and blackouts were ordered. Because of this, the doctors and nurses were unable to check his blood count and he sunk so low that the doctor told me he did not expect him to live through the night and wanted me to be aware of this fact.
One of the nurses on duty said she had never seen anyone survive with such a low blood count.
As soon as it was daybreak, they were able to ascertain what his blood count was. He was given blood and survived.
This was a harrowing experience for us.
Our baby boy was 2 years old, and I prayed that his father would live so my son could know his dad. We had two other children, two daughters, and ironically he did live while they needed a father the most.
The year all three children had already graduated from college and were married, their father died. We were thankful they had a father when they really needed him.
