GALVESTON — Two men were airlifted to the University of Texas Medical Branch on Saturday morning after their helicopter crashed into the Gulf of Mexico about 75 miles southeast of Galveston.
A pilot and one passenger were flying in a helicopter leased from Broussard, La.-based Rotorcraft Leasing Co. when it crashed into the water, according to a media release from the U.S. Coast Guard.
About 10:50 a.m., the company called the U.S. Coast Guard to report the aircraft had gone down and gave its location relative to an oil rig about 75 miles southeast of Galveston.
A supply ship in the area headed for the helicopter’s last reported position and found the crash site. The crew rescued the two men and kept them aboard the ship until a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Houston arrived. The men were taken by air to UTMB, where they were treated for severe back injuries.
