Juanita ‘Janie’ Leyva
GALVESTON — Juanita “Janie” Leyva, 90, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 2, 2009, at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. She was born in Bryan, Texas on March 18, 1919. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and active in the Altar Society. She was affectionately known by everyone as “Momo Leyva”. She was known as the “caregiver” to anyone who needed her help. She was a very devout and spiritual person, starting the day by reciting the Rosary and saying her morning prayers. She attended Sunday Mass every week until her illness prevented her from going. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always put her family first.
She was preceded in death by her husband Simon Leyva; parents Francisco and Demetria Gonzales; step-father Manuel De Quaz; mother-in law and father-in-law Francisco and Petra Leyva; a special uncle and compadre Phillip Morales; sisters Romanita Ramos, Laurencia Elizondo, Pila Menchaca, Santos Serna; brothers Ramon Gonzales and Gabrial Gonzales; step-sister Petra Castillo.
She is survived by her daughters Janie Ayala and husband Henry and Frances Brown and husband Harry; sons Simon Leyva, Jr. and wife Lillian, Lupe Leyva and wife Adele, Frank Leyva and wife Irene, Felipe Leyva and wife Becky, John Leyva and wife Margie, Joe Leyva and wife Yolanda and Michael Leyva and wife Kris; sisters Catalina Harness, Victoria Flores, Petra Balli, Beverly Peavy, Henrietta de Los Santos; brothers Manuel Gonzales and Santiago Gonzales; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary to begin at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father E.J. Stein officiating. Entombment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Rick Ayala, Michael Brown, III, Bo Leyva, Lupe Leyva, Jr., Nick Leyva, Johnny Leyva, Jr., Joe Leyva, Jr., and Michael Leyva, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Mario Ayala, Jason Leyva, Manuel Leyva, Daniel Leyva, Phil Leyva and Simon Leyva.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Ocean View Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time.
