ANGLETON – The Angleton Ladycats just had too much power and speed for Texas City on Thursday.

Angleton (21-4) scored a 9-3 win against the Lady Stings (14-15) in a winner-take-all game of the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Texas City was looking to surprise the No. 5-ranked Ladycats, and they came out with a vengeance by loading the bases in the first frame after an infield hit by leadoff batter Brookly Devine and a couple of walks from Ladycat pitcher Mary Hillier.

But with two outs, left fielder Cori Rubio stopped the scoring threat, making a running catch on a ball hit by Miranda Sheridan that looked like it was headed to the gap.

The Angleton bats gave the struggling Hillier some cushion in its home half of the first inning by scoring four runs.

Hillier threw 58 pitches in the first two innings as the Lady Stings again loaded the bases in the second frame. A double from Samantha Martinez, a walk to Mariah Santibanez and a defensive error juiced up the bases with one out.

This time, Texas City did push a couple of runs across, the first on a bases-loaded walk. A single by senior Kayla Bjerke to left field sliced the lead in half, 4-2. But a fly out and strikeout left the bases loaded for the second inning in a row.

“We lost our opportunity to get more runs,” Texas City coach Jennifer Oregoesan said. “I think we were just swinging a bit harder than we should have been instead of looking for base hits. So, we just over estimated and could have gone for a big kill — kind of the drives we’ve been making all season.”

Angleton continued to plug away at the plate using some tremendous speed to beat out some infield ground balls.

Texas City added its final run in the fifth.
