LUFKIN – After losing the opening game of the NJCAA Region XIV double-elimination tournament in Lufkin, the Galveston College softball team won twice as they tried to advance to the title game.
The Whitecaps entered postseason play ranked No. 8 in the NCJAA national poll but were eliminated by Trinity Valley Community College, 1-0, on Saturday.
Whitecaps pitcher Brooke Seneshen scattered six hits in seven innings while walking one and striking out four. But three of the hits came in the fifth inning and allowed the Lady Cardinals to score the only run of the game.
But Galveston couldn’t get anything going offensively against Trinity Valley pitcher Kayla Cosby. Cosby scattered five hits in six innings of work without a walk.
After losing the opener, 3-2, to Northeast Texas Community College on Thursday, the Whitecaps answered by beating Paris Junior College, 5-1, on Friday.
Galveston College kept its hopes alive in its first game Saturday with a 3-1 win against Navarro Junior College.
The Whitecaps got all of their offense in the first inning when leadoff hitter Savannah Martin was hit by a pitch then scored on a double by Marina Rios.
Rios scored when Ally Johnson hit a 1-2 pitch for a two-run home run to give Galveston a 3-0 lead.
Seneshen took advantage of the early lead, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings of work to earn the win.
