SANTA FE – Like most teams in District 24-4A, Santa Fe baseball coach Ronnie Wulf has the challenge of putting all the pieces together when it comes to pursuing a postseason berth.
While the Indians have pitching depth, their 5-10 start has been mainly because of an inability to get clutch hits, coupled with defensive mistakes.
“I’m not real sure yet on how we stack up,” said Wulf, whose Santa Fe squad welcomes Friendswood tonight at 7 p.m. as play in both 24-4A and 24-5A heats up this week. “We’re up and down ... yet we’re in the same boat as most of the other teams in the district.”
Friendswood (15th) and Santa Fe (19th) are two of three 24-4A teams ranked in the latest 4A poll from h5ab.com (Ball High is 20th).
The Indians are familiar with the teams ranked in both the 5A and 4A polls, having faced Brenham (sixth in 4A), Brazoswood (sixth in fifth), Clements (15th in 5A) and Bryan.
“It doesn’t do a lot for your record,” Wulf said of Santa Fe’s daunting nondistrict schedule, “but it certainly gets you ready for this time of year.”
Friendswood opened an intriguing three-game week as it defeated Galena Park, 6-1, on Monday. The Mustangs will wrap up the stretch when they take on Texas City on Friday night.
The Stings will resume 24-4A play when Dawson visits for a 7 p.m. game tonight.
Ball High heads out to Galena Park this afternoon, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
Clear Creek (10-6), ranked ninth in the h5ab.com poll, opens its District 24-5A season today when rival Clear Lake visits Mallory Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
The Wildcats come into the day looking to snap a two-game losing streak, while the Falcons are coming off a successful weekend at the Texas City/Dickinson Tournament, having won all four games and allowing just 10 runs in the same span.
Dickinson, which also had a productive weekend in the Texas City/Dickinson Tournament, takes on Clear Falls as the Gators welcome the Knights at 1 p.m. today.
Clear Springs faces Clear Brook at 1 p.m.
“There are several teams in our district that have lost at least one pitcher,” Wulf said. “The challenge will be for them to find someone who can step up.”
Which is a quote that might best describe the state of high school baseball in the area.
