SANTA FE – Like most teams in District 24-4A, Santa Fe baseball coach Ronnie Wulf has the challenge of putting all the pieces together when it comes to pursuing a postseason berth.

While the Indians have pitching depth, their 5-10 start has been mainly because of an inability to get clutch hits, coupled with defensive mistakes.

“I’m not real sure yet on how we stack up,” said Wulf, whose Santa Fe squad welcomes Friendswood tonight at 7 p.m. as play in both 24-4A and 24-5A heats up this week. “We’re up and down ... yet we’re in the same boat as most of the other teams in the district.”

Friendswood (15th) and Santa Fe (19th) are two of three 24-4A teams ranked in the latest 4A poll from h5ab.com (Ball High is 20th).

The Indians are familiar with the teams ranked in both the 5A and 4A polls, having faced Brenham (sixth in 4A), Brazoswood (sixth in fifth), Clements (15th in 5A) and Bryan.

“It doesn’t do a lot for your record,” Wulf said of Santa Fe’s daunting nondistrict schedule, “but it certainly gets you ready for this time of year.”

Friendswood opened an intriguing three-game week as it defeated Galena Park, 6-1, on Monday. The Mustangs will wrap up the stretch when they take on Texas City on Friday night.

The Stings will resume 24-4A play when Dawson visits for a 7 p.m. game tonight.

Ball High heads out to Galena Park this afternoon, with first pitch at 1 p.m.

Clear Creek (10-6), ranked ninth in the h5ab.com poll, opens its District 24-5A season today when rival Clear Lake visits Mallory Field for a 1 p.m. contest.

The Wildcats come into the day looking to snap a two-game losing streak, while the Falcons are coming off a successful weekend at the Texas City/Dickinson Tournament, having won all four games and allowing just 10 runs in the same span.

Dickinson, which also had a productive weekend in the Texas City/Dickinson Tournament, takes on Clear Falls as the Gators welcome the Knights at 1 p.m. today.

Clear Springs faces Clear Brook at 1 p.m.

“There are several teams in our district that have lost at least one pitcher,” Wulf said. “The challenge will be for them to find someone who can step up.”

Which is a quote that might best describe the state of high school baseball in the area.

Ball High at Galena Park, 1 p.m.

Coach Wulf has his work cut out for him if he plans to repeat the season he had last year. That tough schedule before starting district games should help. Injuries to key personnel are a tough break but they do happen. A talented bench and good sub varsity programs can help. I hope I have a chance to catch a few SF games this season. Maybe Keith Gray will let me sneak up SH-6 some day. [smile]

Buck, come on up to the pressbox tonight... you can run the new scoreboard and enjoy all the free hotdogs my wallet can support... bring ole JBG too... same offer to him on peanut m&ms and diet coke...

Robert Buckner

Booked already, sorry. Any home games for the next week, I may just sneak up there.

Besides, I still do not know who JBG really is. SF fans may not want me there, my last game attended was a loss in last years playoff run.

Keith Gray

Heck Buck… “we ain’t superstitious” here in the Fe… and as far as JBG… I was going to oust him by having Norm Bulaich ride up and down La Marque streets giving out peanut M&Ms and that cranberry concoction of a drink he has taken to…

Where can I obtain a SF schedule? The ISD website was useless, it only had Feb. schedule and results. Getting a Ball High schedule was a breeze on the GISD website. Be careful what you say, you have a tendency to get him all riled up.

Norman Bulaich! Ahhhhh Big Norman Bulaich! One of a kind gentlemen! One of a kind! He was BIG and fastttttt! We had a play where Coach Etheredge would send him in motion to the left, and Bobby would take one and a half steps back and hit him with a zinger just after he cut up toward the end zone,....then KATY CLOSE THE DOOR!
-
The boy ran a legitimate 9.5 100 yard dash,..and some times a 9.49 100! He was fast!
-
He was built like Arnold Schwarzenegger! Nobody on the team could hold a candle to him, except Van Buckhart and Bob Smith! They could not "HOT" run him though! The boy was fast I tell you. The LM band had a pep number called, "My Dear Ole Swami!"
-
"Swami , swami, ain't it funny, ain't it funny dear dear ole swami.......!" The only reason I mention this is when that band started to play that number,...BIG BULAICH
started to kicking rocks for real buddy! It was like he had another gear, and another set of lungs to kick in!
-
He was faster than Mcknight from the West Texas City Eagles, but Robert was a slasher,..and could cut on a dime.
-
Bob Smith's folks owned Mainland Construction Company in LaMarque/Texas City for years! The boy was well off.

Thanks for the sports history JBG... I got to see him running on SF's track when Steve Jamail was our head coach and Phil Trotter was our backfield coach. That was BIG news in our little town back then.

The Fe edged the Wood tonight in a tight game 2-0, even though our men were able to muster 9 hits compared to the Mustang's 2. Those Stangs never gave up and Jacob Gwenn battled around 9 pitches with two runners on, but Preston Provanich came got the save after Ty Neuman pitched a shutout. On a personal note, I apologize for butchering any of the young men names when anouncing.

HS baseball is just starting district play and JBG is already talking HS football. It's a 24/7/365 thang for him.
