Teel chasing more championships

Friendswood senior Ryan Teel will defend his 1,600- and 3,200-meter state titles Friday at the Class 4A state track meet in Austin. Teel has also won back-to-back state cross country titles and would end his high school career with six individual state championships if he finishes first in his races this week.

FRIENDSWOOD — Ryan Teel is going for a two-fer of three-peats.

The Friendswood senior is looking to cap an illustrious high school career Friday at the state track and field meet in Austin. He won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter events last year and has a very good chance to repeat this time around. He also has won back-to-back state cross-country titles.

That’s four individual state championships, and he’s going for his fifth and sixth title.

The races this week look to be epic battles. Teel is ranked first in Class 4A in the 1,600 and his time of 4 minutes, 13.09 seconds is more than three seconds faster than the next qualifier, Michael Lindberg of Kingwood Park, who clocked a 4:16.91.

In the 3,200, Teel is ranked second with a time of 9:21.72. The top gun is Lindberg, who checks in at 9:14.70.

The two have battled each other several times during the years and Teel is looking forward to meeting his foe again.

“It’s easy to race against somebody you hate, but he’s such a nice guy,” Teel said. “We like each other and have gotten friendly. He’s a great runner, and that’s who you want to race against because he brings out the best in you.”

The two races will be Friday, with the 3,200 set to go at 10:20 a.m. and the 1,600 scheduled for 8:45 p.m.

“When I was a sophomore doing it for the first time, I thought that it would be hard, but it’s really not,” Teel said. “After the 3,200, I’ll go off and take about a two-hour nap and then I wake up and it’s like another day, so I’ll be ready for the 1,600.”

It’s been a busy week for Teel as he trains to stay in peak condition and also study for AP exams. Then there is the thought that he will be running his final meet as a Mustang.

“It’s definitely an emotional experience,” he said. “I’m never going to have another state meet, and I’m looking forward to it. I have been blessed to have the high school career that I’ve had, and I love wearing ‘Friendswood’ on my chest.”
