FRIENDSWOOD – The Friendswood Lady Mustangs soccer team looked like a well-oiled machine as they charged their way to the region III championship and a trip to the state semifinals.

The key piece that made all the other parts of the team go was Galveston County player of the year Selina Vickery. A sophomore midfielder, Vickery was the proverbial field general for the regional and district champions.

“Selina is very important to our team,” Lady Mustangs head coach Laura Peter said. “Playing in the center, she’s responsible for both sides of the ball.”

Vickery racked up 15 goals and five assists during the Lady Mustangs’ season, both team bests, but she was quick to credit her teammates for Friendswood’s great success this year.

“The team was very supportive of each other, and we worked extraordinarily hard this year,” Vickery said. “I think this was the best bonded team that we’ve had. We worked together and the hard work paid off.”

Peter said Vickery’s team-first attitude is seen in her actions on the pitch as well as in her words.

“She’s a team player; she looks to pass before she looks to shoot,” Peter said. “She distributes well, and she’s tenacious.”

The Lady Mustangs knocked off Jeff Davis, Stratford, Texas City, Ridge Point, Lumberton and College Station to win the region III title. The run would end in the state semifinals with a 4-0 loss to Wylie East.

All along the way in the playoffs, Vickery stepped up to make key plays. Against Stratford, Vickery put away one of the goals in the tiebreaking penalty kick shootout. After Friendswood fell behind 1-0 against Texas City, Vickery came through with the game-tying goal in regulation and the game-winning goal in overtime.

For the regional championship against College Station, Vickery wove through the defense to make the assist on the game-winning goal.

For Vickery, the team’s deep postseason run and trip to Austin was the ultimate fruit of her and her teammates’ labor.

“It was extremely exciting for us because it showed that all our hard work paid off, and we were excited to go and work hard over there, too,” Vickery said.

Peter said that Vickery has constantly been atop her power ranking system that tracks the hard work — such as skills challenges and fitness drills — her players put into bettering themselves since she was a freshman, and she is looking forward to two more years with the well-rounded team leader.

“She’s just a great kid,” Peter said. “She’s gone to state for band. She’s an exceptional student. She just does everything well.”
