SUGAR LAND – Brooke Vannoy’s run-scoring double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave host Fort Bend Austin a 3-2 win against Clear Creek in the third and deciding game of 5A Region III first-round softball series.

The Wildcats dropped Friday’s opening contest, 9-5, and fell behind, 2-0, in the nightcap before evening things up with single runs in fourth and fifth innings.

Maya Thomas led off the Bulldog sixth with her third hit on the game. A fielder’s choice and a fly ball out left Alyssia Torres on second base with two out.

Vannoy worked the count full against Clear Creek pitcher Katlyn Rivera before slapping a double down the left field line to plate the winning run.

The Wildcats put a runner on second with one out in the seventh, but were unable to plate the tying run.

Austin hurler Sara Solis held a 2-0 lead before Brittany Wingate led off the Clear Creek fourth with a solo home run.

The Wildcats evened things up in the fifth when a sacrifice fly by Katelynn Gatica scored Shannon Stoker.

Those two runs equaled what Clear Creek managed against Solis in the first two games.

Solis left Friday’s opening game after five innings with Austin up, 9-1.

The Bulldogs slapped 12 hits against a trip of Wildcat pitchers.

Clear Creek managed to scored four runs in the top of the seventh against Austin’s third pitcher of the game.
