The La Marque football team will open the season as one of the favorites in its new classification, according to The Associated Press.

The Cougars will kick off the 2014 season ranked No. 5 in the Class 4A AP poll, receiving two of 25 possible first-place votes. Topping the 4A rankings is old rival Stephenville, which received 14-first place votes.

La Marque is the only Galveston County football team to receive any votes in the AP polls ranging from Class 6A to Class 2A.

Two-time defending state champion Allen is the preseason No. 1 for the newly named Class 6A. Allen received 15 of 25 first-place votes.

The largest school in the state with an enrollment of almost 6,000 students, Allen has won the past two Division I-5A championships.

No. 2 Katy and third-ranked Cedar Hill split the other 10 first-place votes from a panel of journalists who cover high school football in Texas.

Aledo tops the Class 5A poll after winning 4A titles four of the past five seasons. Cisco tops the 3A poll, and Refugio is No. 1 in 2A.
