LUFKIN — The Galveston College baseball team is still alive three rounds into the rain-delayed, double-elimination NCJAA Region XIV Tournament.

After splitting their first two games, the Whitecaps kept their season alive Monday with a 9-4 win over host Angelina College in the elimination bracket.

Galveston surged ahead to a 7-0 lead after three innings, plating five big runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Whitecaps were helped in the frame by two bases-loaded walks, another run scoring on a passed ball and a two-run single by Jose Garcia.

Nathan Turner drove in three runs, and Zach Drouillard went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored for Galveston.

Ethan Stremmel earned the complete-game win, strikeout out six with five walks. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits.

Galveston 11, Panola College 6

The Whitecaps opened the tournament Saturday with a 11-6 win over Panola College.

Trailing 6-5, Galveston surged ahead for good with a six-run seventh inning. The Whitecaps tied the game with a run scoring on a catcher’s interference call with the bases loaded, then Joshua Santos-Torres singled in the eventual game-winning run.

Austin Baron and Ross McWhorter added RBI hits in the frame.

Santos-Torres also homered and finished with three RBIs. Baron went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Nathan Turner had two hits with a solo homer and scored three times for the Whitecaps.

Gabriel Klobosits picked up the win in 12⁄3 shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit with a walk and one strikeout.

Galveston starter Guillaume Blanchette lasted five innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits — two home runs — with two strikeouts and three walks.

San Jacinto-North 10, Galveston 2

The Whitecaps struggled in Game 2 of the tournament Sunday, giving up big innings in pairs and 15 total hits in a 10-2 loss to San Jacinto College-North.

San Jacinto’s runs came in bunches in back-to-back innings — two in the fifth and three more in the sixth, then two in the eighth and three in the ninth — and the squad homered three times.

Galveston managed only five hits, plating a run in the bottom of the fifth on an error and another in the last of the ninth on a fielder’s choice. Raphael Gladu led the Whitecaps with a pair of hits.

Tournament play resumes Thursday

Rain postponed play Monday night, washed out action Tuesday, and the tournament is scheduled to resume Thursday.

Galveston will face rival Alvin Community College at 7 p.m. Thursday in the elimination bracket semifinals. The winner will move a victory away from the Region XIV championship round and will face the loser of the San Jacinto-North vs. Blinn College matchup. Those squads are playing in the winner’s bracket final, with the victory advancing to the championship round.

The elimination bracket final is set for 1 p.m. Friday, with the championship game starting 4 p.m. Friday. If another game is needed to determine the champion, it will be played 1 p.m. Saturday.
