LEAGUE CITY – A pair of Clear Creek Wildcats were included among the state’s best baseball players as the Texas Sports Writers Association released its Class 5A All-State baseball team Thursday.
Wildcats junior first baseman Harrison Hill was named to the All-State second team, while sophomore Landon Etzel received two separate honors.
Etzel was named to the TSWA All-State second team as a designated hitter, and earned an honorable mention as a third baseman.
For both Hill and Etzel, the honors are just the latest in a slew of postseason awards.
Hill was the Galveston County Player of the Year in baseball and was District 24-5A’s Most Valuable Player.
Hill was also a second-teamer on the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 5A all-state team.
Etzel earned a selection to the All-County baseball first team as a designated hitter and was a unanimous all-district first-team selection.
Etzel received a first-team nod by the THSBCA at third base.
Hill, a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi commit, set a single-season school record with 50 runs batted in during the 2014 season and led the team with .414 batting average.
Etzel batted .403 last season, led the team in stolen bases with 23 and was second on the team in RBIs with 28.
Flower Mound’s Kyle Johnston was Player of the Year on the TSWA’s 5A team.
Johnston was 11-2 with a 0.48 earned run average in pitching Flower Mound to the state title.
The Texas signee was 5-0 in the postseason with 60 strikeouts and eight walks.
