GALVESTON — The Friendswood boys soccer team took a big step closer to winning another district championship with a 3-1 win at Ball High on Wednesday night.

The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Mustangs and set up the team with a chance to win the 43-4A title at home Friday on Senior Night against Texas City.

“The kids really responded,” Friendswood head coach Stephen Peter said. “We played a good game when we had to against a good team. It was a big game.”

The Mustangs (5-1 in district) needed the win against the fourth-place Tors, a team Friendswood eked by, 1-0, in the first round of district play, to keep their path to the district title clear. Friday, the Mustangs fell to Santa Fe, 1-0, suffering their first district loss since 2006 and putting their chances at the league championship in jeopardy.

“That loss was a big eye-opener for the kids,” Peter said. “We talked about coming back and playing with a sense or urgency. They came out and did that.”

Trey Brittenum started the scoring for Friendswood on Wednesday, and the squad went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Cameron Hunnicutt added another goal to give the Mustangs a two-score cushion, but Ball High responded. Jovani Herrera found the back of the net with about 20 minutes to play to brings the Tors within a goal.

Five minutes later, Jared Bouslog gave Friendswood some breathing room when he booted a shot past the keeper for the final difference.

“The win puts us in the playoffs, but we don’t know where we’re going to be,” Peter said. “We want to win that district championship, and we have another big game ahead of us that’ll get us ready for the playoffs. The kids want the district championship, and that’s what they’ll play for.”
