ANGLETON — Despite having nearly three times as many shots on goal, the Clear Falls girls soccer team’s season came to an unexpected end Tuesday in a 1-0 loss to District 24-5A rival Brazoswood in the Region III-5A quarterfinal.
The game was scoreless most of the night, but a Lady Bucs goal by Alisha Lopez with less than three minutes to play regulation gave Brazoswood the victory.
The loss came after the Knights had defeated the District 24-5A rival Brazoswood twice during the regular season, 1-0 and 3-1.
Not that the Knights didn’t have their chances at scoring.
Less than nine minutes into the game, Brazoswood was called for an illegal pass that set up a free kick for Clear Falls’ Leah Draper. But Lady Bucs goalie Elyse Lesco made one of several big stops on the night to deny Clear Falls a goal.
Lesco was busy in the second half, having to stop 14 Knights shots on goal. By comparison the Lady Bucs had only four shots on goal in the half.
One of those, however, came off the foot of Lopez, who sneaked a corner kick pass Clear Falls’ goalie Alex Sheppard at the 77:40 mark.
The Knights recorded playoffs win this season over Fort Bend Travis, 2-0, and Deer Park, 2-2, winning 5-4 in a shootout.
