School may be out for the summer, but there will be plenty of Galveston County athletes in action today.
The county will be well represented in the 12th Annual Greater Houston Football Coaches Association Bayou Bowl, which will be 7 p.m. today at Edward Mercer Stadium in Sugar Land.
The annual all-star contest assembles the Houston area’s top graduated seniors for a competition.
Members of the East team in the East versus West formatted contest include Clear Springs quarterback Zach Cripps, La Marque defensive back Reggie Franklin, Texas City running back Donald Lynch and Dickinson defensive end Xavier Walker.
Another Galveston County athlete will be on the roster of a statewide competition in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s all-star game at 7 p.m. today at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Friendswood third baseman Drew Barba made the South’s roster in the north versus south game that pits the top seniors in Texas from classes 4A and 5A.
Football players from La Marque, Hitchcock and Santa Fe will be sharpening their skills while looking to advance to a statewide event in a regional 7-on-7 football tournament hosted by Hitchcock.
In pool play, Hitchcock and Santa Fe will face competition from Hardin and Stafford, while La Marque will compete against squads from Bridge City, Klein Forest and Sherpherd.
The winners and runners-up from each of the two pools advance to the semifinals of the tournament. Both semifinal winners will qualify for the state tournament, with the two teams playing for regional bragging rights to conclude the day’s events.
The tournament begins 9 a.m. today with Hitchcock opening against Hardin and Santa Fe playing Stafford. La Marque’s first game will be at 10 a.m. against Shepherd.
The semifinals are scheduled for 3 p.m., and the championship game is slated for 4 p.m.
