GALVESTON – Six alumni basketball teams will hoop it up for 10 hours straight as part of a back-to-school supplies drive from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The third annual Basketball Shootout at Wright Cuney Park offers patrons free admission, free food and free school supplies, as well as some entertaining basketball action and a moonwalk for the younger kids.

Event organizer Tre Hollins said he wanted to bring the shootout to Galveston Island because he felt the kids there needed a little extra help as they prepare to go back to school.

There will be games all day plus side competitions during breaks in the action, but it is not a tournament format with one alumni team earning bragging rights.

“Everybody is just going to be having fun,” Hollins said. “It’s more just to bring the community out.”

There will be six alumni teams at the event: two representing Ball High School, one from La Marque, one from Hitchcock and two others from the Dallas and Austin areas.

The school supplies were collected through donations at Wright Cuney.
