GALVESTON – The Galveston College baseball team was a welcoming host to the out-of-state Bears of Baton Rouge Community College on Tuesday, giving the Louisiana club 13 hits in a 12-3 loss in a nonleague matchup.

The Bears took a 4-1 lead with a trio of runs in the top of the second inning and blew the game open with a sixth-run fifth to grab a 10-3 lead.

Darren Bueche went 4-for-5 for the Bears with two RBIs, and Nicholas Gobert had two hits with a double, scored three runs and drove in three.

Kevin Macias had two hits with a double and drove in one for Galveston, and teammate Jose Garcia had two hits and one RBI.

The Whitecaps (30-16 overall, 23-9 Region XIV South) return to league play Friday for a doubleheader against last-place Laredo Community College (8-32, 3-29) starting at 1 p.m. on the island.

With 10 games left in the regular season, Galveston has already clinched a playoff berth. The Whitecaps are in second place in Region XIV South, one game behind first-place Alvin Community College (33-11, 24-8), ranked 15th in the nation in the latest NCJAA poll.
