GALVESTON — The Galveston College baseball team split a high-scoring doubleheader against the Angelina College Roadrunners on Tuesday, with the Whitecaps’ six-run rally in the final inning falling short in an 18-16 loss and a big first inning pushing the squad to a 9-8 win in the nightcap.

The teams combined for 35 hits in Game 1 and 18 in Game 2.

Angelina plated seven runs in the top of the seventh in the opening game and led 10-0 before Galveston scored its first run in the third. Down 18-10, the Whitecaps scored six times in the bottom of the seventh, three coming on a homer by Jose Garcia, before the Roadrunners closed out the contest.

Garcia went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and scored three runs. Joshua Santos-Torres doubled twice and drove in three, Taylor Beene had two hits with a double and three RBIs, and Jorge Davila had a hit and plated three for the Whitecaps.

Angelina leadoff hitter Zach Smith went 3-for-6 with three RBI and finished a single short of the cycle.

In the second game, Galveston jumped put to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and led 7-0 before the Roadrunners chipped away at the advantage, scoring five in the top of the fifth to tie it at 8.

The Whitecaps went ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Nathan Turner drove home Kevin Macias on a two-out single.

Garcia had two hits with a homer and three RBIs in the nightcap.

Relief pitchers Jeremy Sylvester and Kyle Legget pitched the final 22⁄3 shutout innings for the Whitecaps. Sylvester, who earned the win, allowed one hit with two walks in 12⁄3 innings, and Legget got the save after tossing a perfect seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts.
