DAYTON – Foul trouble led to the end of the La Marque Lady Cougars’ bid for a possible state title run as they fell to the Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks, 48-38, in a Class 3A, Region III area-round game on Thursday night.
“The game was called tighter than we were used to,” said Lady Cougars coach Monique Everett, whose team finished at 14-14 overall.
“We got into foul trouble early and were forced to use some of our younger players more than we expected.”
La Marque trailed by only four points entering the second half, but Hardin-Jefferson broke the game open and led, 32-23, at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Hawks extended the lead to double digits, but the Lady Cougars made several bids to get back into the game before mistakes helped seal their fate.
“Hardin-Jefferson is such a well-disciplined team,” Everett said. “Once they turned it up, we got frazzled and were down by 10 before we knew it.”
Brittany Bennett led La Marque with 24 points and 11 rebounds, as the Lady Cougars were not able to generate much offense against the Lady Hawks, who improved to 20-13.
