As girls basketball enters the playoffs, boys hoops action tonight has postseason implications for three of the county’s 5A squads.
While Clear Lake (10-1) has secured the top spot in 24-5A, Clear Springs, Clear Falls and Clear Creek each have seeding and shots at the postseason on the line.
And Brazoswood could make it more interesting should the Bucs find a way to beat Clear Brook tonight. A win is the only shot Brazoswood has at making the playoffs.
Should Lake beat Dickinson the Falcons will be 11-1. A loss and the Falcons will be 10-2.
Either way, Lake will be champion.
So, it is a battle for the remaining three postseason berths.
If Clear Springs beats Clear Creek and Brook does beat Brazoswood, then Springs is the second-place team, with Falls and Creek tied for third.
That would lead to a possible Creek vs. Falls seeding game to determine which team is the third seed and which is the fourth.
However, if Creek beats Springs tonight, them it is a three-way tie for second place.
Depending on the tie-breaker, records against each other may play a determining factor.
Springs is 2-0 against Falls and would be 0-2 against Creek. Creek is 1-1 against Falls and would be 2-0 against Springs, while Falls is 0-2 against Springs and 1-1 against Creek.
Should the overall record against one another come into play, Lake finishes first, Clear Creek second, Clear Springs as the third seed and Clear Falls as the fourth seed for the postseason.
That is just a bit more confusing than in 4A, where Texas City, Friendswood and Dawson are expected to win out tonight, forcing a three-way tie atop the district.
All are guaranteed postseason spots; it’s just a matter of which team is first, which will be second and which will be third.
It is likely to come down to positive points between the three teams to break the tie since they have equal records against one another.
If so, Friendswood finishes first, Texas City second and Dawson in third.
The top two divisions are the only ones with a wild ending in sight as district play closes out.
La Marque either will win 24-3A outright with a win tonight at Stafford. If the Cougars lose, it’s a three-way tie for first and a likely “mini-tournament” to determine seeding on Friday, La Marque Athletic Director Mike Jackson said.
