HOUSTON – The Pearland Oilers walked off with an extra-inning win in Game 1 of the best-of-three Region III-5A quarterfinal against the Clear Creek Wildcats on Thursday.

Creek scored three runs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra frames before losing, 8-7, when Pearland scored a run in the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Jacob Mihalski hit a two-run double to left scoring Stephen Garcia, who led off with a double, and Trevor Pardo.

Pearland added a run in the bottom of the inning, then scored three runs in third and fifth innings.

The Wildcats comeback started in the fifth inning when Satchel McElroy laced a run-scoring single up the middle on the first pitch he saw to score Pardo, who led off with a walk.

The Wildcats had plenty of opportunities to tack on more runs throughout the game. Clear Creek stranded 16 total runners on base, leaving the bases loaded in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, and for most of the night could not capitalize on the wildness of Pealand pitchers who issued a total of 13 walks.

Landon Eztel made sure the Wildcats would not leave the bases loaded again. With two outs, Eztel smoked a bases-clearing double to left scoring Austin Adams, Michael Rohland and McElroy to tie the game at 7. The Wildcats could not capitalize on two walks in each of the eighth and ninth innings.

Pearland’s Hayden Cole ended the game in the bottom of the ninth with a sharp run-scoring single just off the glove of shortstop Pardo, scoring Ben Paddock.

Harrison Hill played a solid first base for the Wildcats, including snagging a line drive for a double play in the second inning. McElroy led the Wildcats with three hits, and Anthony Cole had two hits. Clear Creek starter Aron Solis pitched six innings, striking out four and allowing seven runs. The Wildcats will be looking to even up the series at 7 p.m. today at the University of Houston.
