SANTA FE – Youth was served in the opener of the Class 4A, Region III first-round playoff series between Lamar Consolidated and Santa Fe, yet it was the home team which got the better end of the menu.
In a game between freshman arms, Lady Indians hurler Shelbi Sunseri topped Lady Mustangs ace Emily Otto in a 1-0 victory on Friday night, giving Santa Fe the edge heading into today’s 2 p.m. contest. Sunseri had her share of issues, yet was able to walk away with a two-hit shutout, striking out 10 in the process.
“She had some hiccups, but she threw the ball well,” Santa Fe coach Trish Leidy said of Sunseri. “She’s just doing what she’s been doing.”
The Lady Indians can close out the series with a win in Rosenberg today, with Game 3 (if necessary) beginning at 4 p.m.
Should Santa Fe advance, they will take on the winner of the Houston Reagan/Tomball series in next week’s area round.
Sunseri needed only glimmer of offense from her teammates, which came in the bottom of the second inning.
Lacey Smith drew a one-out walk from Otto, then moved to second on Hayley Chavez’s sacrifice bunt before moving to third on a passed ball.
Following a walk to Kayley Tisdale, Erin Palmer singled up the middle to plate Smith.
Lamar Consolidated had several chances to crack the goose egg on the scoreboard, yet were denied by Sunseri at every junction.
The Lady Mustangs (16-10) drew walks from Amber Honsacker and Samantha Vasquez in the top of the second, yet were left stranded. Courtney Russell launched a deep drive in the top of the third that nearly cleared the fence, but had to settle for a double before being left on base, unable to advance further.
Sunseri’s control failed her again in the fourth, as she plunked both Vasquez and Marisa Zuniga, but was able to find her stride in time, further frustrating the Lady Mustangs.
Russell singled in the seventh to give Lamar Consolidated one last chance, but Sunseri, as had been the case throughout the evening, was able to keep the Lady Mustangs’ bats at bay.
