Peter Sunseri would have been extremely proud of his old team.

His Ball High Tornadoes won the memorial team tennis tournament held each year in his honor, beating Alief Taylor in the championship match, 7-2.

The Tors swept all four boys matches and also claimed three of the girls matches.

On the boys side, Cade Harrington and Dominic Elzner won in singles, as did the doubles teams of Brandon Locklin/Paul McNatt and Jordan Bassett/Austin Schwab.

Winning for the girls were Hanna Grow-Morales in singles and the teams of Chloe Flores/Joanie Kelso and Catherine Thomas/Inez von Fircks in doubles.

Ball High opened with an first-round win over Pasadena, 8-1, then defeated Santa Fe in the semifinals, 6-3.

Dobie’s junior varsity placed third, beating Santa Fe, 5-4.

Rounding out the top eight finishers were Sam Rayburn, fifth; Brazosport, sixth; San Jacinto College South Netters, seventh; and Pasadena, eighth.

Oh so close

Santa Fe lost a heartbreaker to the Dobie JV in the third-place match.

The Indians, however, totally dominated the girls’ play, with Keanna Hunter and Destiny Herrera sweeping the singles and Herrera and Ashley Strain winning in doubles.

Also victorious for Santa Fe was the mixed doubles team of Hunter and Ross Nelms.

The Indians beat Sam Rayburn in the first round, 6-3.

Tip of the day

When returning service, cheat up on the second serve.

Chances are your opponent is not going to hit their second serve as hard as the first, plus you want to force them into hitting a better second serve, which sometimes results in a pressured double fault.
