KEMAH — It’s difficult not to have a good time in Kemah, but this weekend will be exceptionally entertaining with the Memorial Hermann Kemah Triathlon beginning early this morning.

The first event is the Sprint Triathlon, which begins at 6:45 a.m. The race consists of 500 meters of swimming on a triangular course in Galveston Bay, 12.5 miles of biking that takes riders south on state Highway 146 to Dickinson Bayou and back and 3.1 miles of running through Clear Lake Shores.

A kids’ triathlon follows at 8:30 a.m.

On Sunday, the Olympic Triathlon and 5K fun run begin at 6:45 a.m.

The Olympic Triathlon is 1,500 meters of swimming that begins with a time trial-type start from a boat anchored in the bay. The run is followed by 40 kilometers of out-and-back biking down state Highway 146 to a turnaround at 25th Street in Texas City. The event finishes with a 10-kilometer run through Clear Lake Shores.

For the Olympic competition, first prize is $1,525, and second place is good for $1,000.

The Kemah Triathlon is a qualifier for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco. Because of that, adjustments have been made to the race that will make it similar to the championship race in Northern California.

Along with the boat start, there will be a half-mile run to transition from the swim exit to the bicycle start, and roads will be cleared and as clean as possible.

The post-race ceremony will take place in the back of the Texas Avenue parking lot, overlooking the boardwalk.

Competitors will be divided into 13 age groups, ranging from younger than 15 to 70 and older.

As of Wednesday night, the triathlon field was 85 percent full, with a field limit of 1,000 in each triathlon.

The charity for the event is Jenny’s Light, which assists women affected by postpartum depression.
