GALVESTON – The Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team played inhospitable hosts to Laredo Community College this weekend.
The Whitecaps got a shutout win on Friday, then swept both ends of a doubleheader Saturday to improve their record to 34-16.
In Friday’s game, Zac Vasek pitched seven shutout innings to get the win. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five in the 2-0 victory.
Kevin Macias walked twice and scored both runs for the Whitecaps. Jose Garcia went 2-for-3 to account for half of Galveston College’s hits.
In Saturday’s opener, the Whitecaps extended Laredo’s scoreless inning streak to 16 in a 5-0 win.
Jose Rendon got the win on the mound after allowing four singles in six innings, with no walks and a strikeout.
The Whitecaps pounded out 11 hits, including a double by Ross McWhorter, who went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Nathan Turner and Raphael Gladu each went 2-for-4, with Gladu getting an RBI. Taylor Beene went 2-for-2, reached on a walk and batted in a run and scored once.
Laredo Community College finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning of the last game Saturday when they used five singles and a sacrifice to take a 3-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Ethan Stremmel settled down to hold Laredo scoreless through the next four innings. He got the win when his offense scored a run in the third inning and three in the sixth. Gabriel Klobosits and Kyle Legget combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
Turner went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot and scored twice, and McWhorter went 4-for-5 with an RBI.
Gladu went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, and Garcia went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Whitecaps have six games left in the regular season and visit Angelina College in Lufkin for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
